Billed as the 'Stamkos Sweepstakes', the Tampa Bay Lightning won the NHL lottery sweepstakes for the number 1 draft pick in the 2008 NHL entry draft. Tampa Bay entered with a 48.8-per-cent chance of winning the lottery after stumbling to a 31-42-9 record in the regular season, and beat out the LA Kings won tied the Lightning for the worst record in the NHL. Tampa Bay will surely select Sarnia Sting forward Steven Stamkos with their first pick. Steve Stamkos ranked second in the Ontario Hockey League in goals (58) and fifth in points (105), and has been compared to a combination of Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin. Second pick overall with most likely be either Drew Doughty of the Guelph Storm, Alex Pietrangelo of the Niagara IceDogs and Zach Bogosian of the Peterborough Petes but the clear away runner for the top spot is definitely Steve Stamkos. The NHL draft round out with the Los Angeles Kings picking second, the Atlanta Thrashers third, the St. Louis Blues fourth and the New York Islanders fifth.

Tampa Bay has picked well in the past as ten years ago they drafted Vincent Lecavalier first overall in 1998 where he has become one of the best players in the NHL. Eve though Stamkos is the most talented player in the draft the Lightning have great depth and scoring up front with Lecavalier and St Louis and they are in desperate need of backend and defensive help, so there is the possibility of trading their first round pick for a number of players that can help them immediately.
