Mickey Renaud 18-year-old Windsor SpitfiresҠteam captain Mickey Renaud collapsed suddenly and passed away on February 18, 2008. It was determined by autopsy that he died of natural causes due to an underlying heart condition identified as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The toxicological analysis showed no evidence of drugs of any kind.

Tributes were held around the OHL in the days following Renaudӳ passing and all teams wore his number 18 on the back of their helmets for the rest of the season as a league-wide show of respect. Renaudӳ jersey will be officially retired by the Windsor Spitfires in late September at the Windsor Arena. OHL Schedule and emphasis on player education All clubs play a 68-game unbalanced schedule that sees them play significantly more games against teams in their own conference and division than they do against teams from the opposing conference and divisions. The OHLӳ regular season begins in late September, and normally concludes during the third week of March. Most games are played on weekends as a direct result of the leagueӳ emphasis on player education. In an effort to minimize the number of school days missed for its players, approximately ninety per cent (90%) of OHL games are scheduled between Thursday and Sunday. All OHL teams employ educational consultants to assist team players in their educational pursuits. Ninety-five per cent (95%) of the players in the league attend either secondary school or college or university. In fact, the OHL boasts a greater high school graduation rate than the Ontario provincial average for persons of the same age group (15-21).
