Injuries are beginning to take their toll on some teams as the NHL slides through the halfway point of the season. From Marian Gaborik in Minnesota to Adam Foote in Colorado, teams will see their depth tested. Ever wanted to be a pro athlete? If you can skate, you might want to fill in an application at the NHL head office. The way hockey players are dropping like frozen pucks, it wonӴ be long before your number is called. Just make sure you get in on the health plan.

Hereӳ the latest round of injuries that hockey handicappers need to know. Looks like one of our old friends is back on the shelf for a while.

Marian Gaborik, Minnesota Wild Gaborik has become a pariah in the Twin Cities press for his fragility ֠and his decision not to play through pain. After missing most of the start of the season with a groin injury, Gaborik played just four more games before undergoing surgery on a torn labrum in his left hip.

Those were four good games for the Wild at 2-1-1 with Gaborik providing two goals and two assists to help Minnesota stay competitive in the Western Conference at 19-16-3 (18-20 ATS, minus-3.86 units). HeӬl miss the next 10-14 weeks, and the Wild will miss the playoffs judging by the 2-7-1 record theyӶe posted in their last 10 sans Gaborik.

Paul Kariya, St. Louis Blues Kariya also had hip surgery on Monday, with a possible torn labrum on the left side, and is out of commission indefinitely. Kariya hadnӴ missed a game in three seasons; although his numbers are declining at age 34, the Vancouver native was still a highly valuable asset for the Blues with two goals and 13 assists in just 11 games ֠nine of those assists on the power play.

St. Louis is 10-15-3 since Kariya last played in November to fall to 15-21-3 (23-16 ATS, 1.45 units). Andy McDonald (18 points in 16 games) is also expected to miss the BluesҠthree-game road swing through Western Canada while he recovers from a broken ankle.

Adam Foote, Colorado Avalanche Foote had four assists and a minus-7 rating for Colorado in 30 games before suffering a triceps injury Sunday against Minnesota. Itӳ too soon to call this a case of addition by subtraction, although Foote has been a less useful player than the version who patrolled the blueline for the Avalanche in their Stanley Cup years.

Still, Foote was the fourth-best defenseman in Columbus last year with 63 Player Contribution points, which would have put him first on Coloradoӳ list. His 19:52 of ice time per game will be difficult to adequately replace.

Ottawa Senators at Boston Bruins Thursday, Jan 8, 7:00 p.m. (ET) NESN The Bruins are threatening to skate away with the Eastern Conference title. They had a 10-game winning streak snapped Saturday by Buffalo, but still hold a comfortable lead in the East at 29-7-4 and an even bigger lead against the betting odds. Not only has Tim Thomas (.932 save percentage) failed to show signs of falling back to earth, but Manny Fernandez (.930 SV%) has also revived his career with a 13-3-1 record in 17 games. Considering the Bruins allow 30.6 shots on goal per game (No. 22 in the NHL), this duo had better keep up the good work.

Ottawa fans would be happy to have either of those two men between the pipes. The Senators are getting so-so results from Alex Auld (.908 SV%) and Martin Gerber (.907), but so-so is deadly on a team that is in last place in the NHL with 2.32 goals per game. Boston, meanwhile, is first in scoring at 3.62 per game. The Sens have gone 3-8-2 over the past month to slip to last place in the Northeast at 13-19-6.

The news got worse for Ottawa supporters on Saturday when defenseman Anton Volchenkov was dumped into the boards by the Maple Leafs in his first game back since hitting the wall head-first against the Flyers. Volchenkov was the No. 5 blueliner (43 PC points) on a unit that has been picked apart by free agency and injuries since last year. Top defenseman Filip Kuba also remains day-to-day with a groin injury that has kept him off the ice since Dec. 20.
